After putting away the first two games, the Mustangs quickly put out Grambling State's third game spark to dominate the match 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-23). With this win, the Mustangs advance to 5-1 on the season and earn their second win in the Radisson Hotel Mustang Classic at Moody Coliseum.
Junior outside hitter, Rachel Giubilato posted her second consecutive double-double performance with 12 kills and 12 digs. Natalie Peters accumulated another high attack percentage with 14 kills on 23 attempts for a percentage of .522. Peters also nailed three aces and led the team with 17.5 points.
Caitlin Rainbird narrowly missed a double-double performance as she had 11 kills and nine digs. Rainbird served up two aces and 13.5 points. Freshman Kendra Kahanek added eight kills and three blocks.
Madison Hill directed the offense with 32 assists, five digs and two blocks. Freshman Candice Davis completed four service aces one kill and ten digs.
The Mustangs combined for an attack percentage of .361 with 56 kills and 49 digs. SMU held Grambling St. to a hitting percentage of .167 with 29 kills.
SMU played solid in game one and two, keeping Grambling St. under control and dominating the performance. Grambling St. came out with a spark in game three only to have the Mustangs quickly take control and seal the win with eight unanswered points. Jenny Reyes nailed two service aces to start the rally.
The Mustangs will look for the tournament win tonight as they take on Toledo at 7:30 p.m.
