The Mustangs were unable to get their momentum going against Southern Miss today as SMU fell, 32-30, 30-23, 30-26. SMU is now 10-6 on the season and 1-2 in Conference USA play while Southern Miss is 8-9 overall and 1-2 in conference.
Rachel Giubilato registered her fourth consecutive and ninth overall double-double of the season with 19 kills and 12 digs along with three blocks. Caitlin Rainbird marked her seventh double-double this season with 11 kills and 10 digs as well as two blocks. Kendra Kahanek added seven kills while Kara Cornelius had four blocks.
In game one, the teams battled for the first ten points as there were four ties and three lead changes. Southern Miss initiated the first run as the Mustangs put together their own series of runs eventually tying the score at 17-17. From there Southern Miss took off, keeping the lead until the Mustangs tied the score again at 25-25. The Mustangs made a late run holding Southern Miss to 29 points as SMU posted one more point before Southern Miss took over and notched the, 32-30, win. Giubilato had eight kills and six digs while Kahanek totaled four kills. Rainbird compiled two kills, five digs and two blocks and Cornelius had two blocks.
The Mustangs could not get their momentum going in game two as Southern Miss powered forward taking the quick, 11-6, lead. SMU could never get close enough as they made some runs but Southern Miss dominated game two with a, 30-23, win. Giubilato had five kills and three digs in the second game while Rainbird posted five kills and two digs. Cornelius marked another two blocks.
SMU seemed to get off the right foot in game three, taking the early lead, but Southern Miss got their drive going and continued forward. After tying the score at 5-5, Southern Miss did not let the Mustangs get within two points or less till the Mustangs made a late run. With the score 21-20, Southern Miss, the teams fought to stay on top. There were three ties before Southern Miss inched away, taking the, 30-26, win. Giubilato had six kills and four digs and Rainbird had five kills and two digs. Kahanek added three kills while Stefanie Kons notched five digs.
SMU continues their home-match stand as they host two more Conference USA opponents with East Carolina Friday, Sep. 29 at 7:00 p.m. and then Marshall for Parents' Day on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1:00 p.m.
