DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team shut out visiting UTSA Friday afternoon by the score of 5-0 at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU improves to 3-1-1 while UTSA drops to 2-4. The win was also SMU head coach John Cossaboon's 50th win on the Hilltop.
SMU came off the opening whistle in a strong offensive mode, taking at least nine shots in the first five minutes of the game. SMU finally got on the scoreboard at the 28:57 mark when Marisa Schieda tapped a shot into the net. At the 43:03 mark, freshman Alissa Ireland recorded her first collegiate goal after one-timing a pass from Schieda, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, SMU struck early as freshman Kim Peabody collected her first collegiate goal with an angled shot past UTSA goalkeeper Rachel Francis. Junior Krystal Bailey gave SMU a 4-0 lead at the 51:35 mark as she drove the ball into the box and fired a netted shot. Junior Kimber Bailey rounded out the Mustang scoring in the game with a one-timer at the 70:34 mark.
SMU totally dominated the game stats, taking 29 shots compared to the Roadrunners' two. SMU was awarded 12 corner kicks compared to UTSA's two.
The Mustangs close out the brief homestand with a contest vs. #1 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. CSTV will be taping the game for broadcast on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 7:00 p.m.
