AUSTIN (SMU) - The men and women's SMU swimming and diving teams are in Austin this weekend competing against some of the best swimmers in the nation. After the first night, the No. 8 Mustang women's team trails No. 2 Arizona and No. 12 Texas while the Mustang men team looks to rout No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Arizona.
In the first event of the night, the Mustang relay team of Leane Darling, Petra Klosova, Angela San Juan Cisneros and Michelle Vlasakova placed fourth with a time of 1:34.95 in the women's 200 free relay while Jennifer Blackman, Justine Clark, Celina Lemmen and Katie Roberts timed in at 1:37.25 for sixth-place.
In the men's 200 free relay, Thomas Fadnes, Alex Hetland, Luka Vrtovec and Shane Milu swam a time of 1:22.10 for fourth-place while Jerr Merritt, Jani Brackett, Justin Smith and Brett Denham combined for ninth-place with a time of 1:25.29. Travis Callaghan, Grega Plevelj, Josh Cohen and Daniel Veale touched in at 1:28.62 for 11th-place.
Anja Carman swam a time of 4:24.52 in the women's 400 IM as she placed fifth and Jennifer Basel came in eighth with a time of 4:27.64. Devon Callaghan followed in ninth-place with a career-best time of 4:28.55 while Jaime Williamson touched in also with a career-best time at 4:35.16 for 12th-place.
For the men, Maverick Smalley placed fifth in the men's 400 IM with a career-best time of 3:58.04 and Nate Clark touched the wall at 4:06.79 for ninth-place. Chris Ginder swam a time of 4:11.36 for 11th-place.
Darling touched in for third-place in the women's 100 free with a time of 51.33 while J. Blackman followed in fourth-place with a time of 51.42. Vlasakova stopped the clock at 52.20 for ninth-place and Lemmen placed 12th with a time of 52.87.
Vrtovec swam a time of 45.35 for ninth-place in the men's 100 free as Fadnes followed in tenth-place with a time of 45.99. Milu came in at 11th with a time of 46.82 and Merritt placed 12th with a time of 47.75.
In the women's 200 back, Carman touched the wall in third-place with a time of 2:00.42 and Klosova quickly followed in fourth-place with a career-best time of 2:01.56.
Ian Clark placed second in the men's 200 back with a time of 1:47.08 while Colton Ingraham finished 11th with a time of 1:56.41.
Devon Callaghan finished in seventh-place in the women's 200 breast with a career-best time of 2:20.30 while Basel clocked in at 2:20.94 in ninth-place. Williamson finished 11th with a career-best time of 2:22.95 and Tamara Sambrailo followed in 12th-place with a time of 2:23.55.
In the men's 200 breast, Mitchell Johnson touched in at fifth-place with a season-best time of 2:04.47 while Daniel Veale finished ninth with a career-best time of 2:11.25. Quickly following, Patrick Raschle timed in at 2:11.53 for 10th-place and Matt Hock placed 11th with a time of 2:21.15.
Cisneros led the way in the women's 100 fly for the Mustangs as she placed fourth with a time of 55.73 while J. Clark followed in fifth place with a time of 55.80 and Darling timed in at 56.35 for sixth-place.
Hetland took third-place in the men's 100 fly with a career-best time of 48.60 and Justin Smith clocked in a season-best at 49.65 in fifth-place. Denham came in at 51.42 for 11th-place and Josh Cohen followed in 12th-place with a time of 53.22.
Roberts placed third in the women's 500 free with a time of 4:52.80 and J. Blackman timed in at 4:55.84 for fifth-place. Federica Felloni timed in at 5:08.32 for ninth-place and Tiffany Sammis finished 11th with a season-best time of 5:09.33.
Michael Dmitriev clocked in at 4:37.47 in the men's 500 free for eighth-place and T. Callaghan timed in at 4:48.24 for 10th-place.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Klosova, D. Callaghan, J. Clark and Darling combined for a second-place finish and time of 3:45.19 which is the second best 400 medley relay time posted by the Mustangs this season and Carman, Sambrailo, Cisneros and Vlasakova placed sixth with a time of 3:50.26.
On the men's side, I. Clark, Hetland, Vrtovec and Fadnes touched in at 3:16.98 the second best 400 medley relay time for a Mustang relay this season and a third-place finish while Smith, Plevelj, N. Clark and Milu timed in at 3:27.85 for ninth-place. The relay team of Smalley, Johnson, Pontus Renholm and Brackett followed in tenth-place with a time of 3:29.41.
Kristin Schild placed fifth in the women's three-meter diving with a score of 257.05 while Mara Morhouse placed ninth with a score of 199.15. Off the one-meter board, Schild scored 230.20 for seventh-place and Morhouse placed ninth with a score of 201.60.
Preston Holcombe scored 261.20 in the men's one-meter diving for fourth-place and with a score of 270.75 placed fourth on the three-meter board.
The tri-meet will continue tomorrow beginning at noon.
