DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team unleashed a relentless attack on the Southern Miss goal in the second half, outshooting the visiting Golden Eagles, 12-8, but were unable to get a tying goal in a 1-0 loss Friday night at Westcott Field.
SMU falls to 5-4-1 this season, 1-2-1 against Conference USA opposition. Southern Miss improves to 6-6-0, and 2-1-0 in C-USA games.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie through much of the first half, until Southern Miss forward Sarah McFadden scored the game's lone goal in the 35th minute when she collected a centering pass from Bianca Ontiveros and slipped a shot off the outside of her foot into the lower right corner of the net.
The Mustangs cranked up their attack in the second half, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 9-2, in the second half - including two shots that hit the goalpost and crossbar - but were unable to slip a shot past USM's Anna Fiser, who recorded her third shutout of the season. SMU goalkeeper Ashley Gunter, a preseason Hermann Trophy nominee, made five saves, while Kimber Bailey, Brittainy Vice and Kim Peabody led the Mustangs with three shots apiece.
The Mustangs return to Westcott Field at 1 p.m., this Sunday, Oct. 14, to take on the Knights of UCF. For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
