DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU men's swimming and diving team finished first in every event in their first dual meet of the 2007-08 season, when they hosted Centenary College Saturday afternoon at Perkins Natatorium. The Mustangs finished with 113.5 points, while Centenary tallied 69.5 points.

The 200 medley relay team got the day off to a good start as Pontus Renholm, Grega Plevelj, Alex Hetland and Travis Callaghan beat Centenary by over seven seconds, touching the wall in 1:33.38.

In the 200 free, Luka Vrtovec finished in 1:42.66, followed by Greg Doughty in 1:45.89. Event three featured Thomas Fadnes completing the 50 free in 21.36, over a second ahead of Chase Lambert of Centenary. In the 200 IM, Maverick Smalley blew Centenary out, touching the wall almost a full 10 seconds ahead of John Cefalu, with a time of 1:53.62.

In a break from swimming action, the teams competed in the one-meter diving event. Landon Owen, Preston Holcombe and Matt Culbertson each performed well for the Mustangs.

The 200 fly saw Brett Denham finish over a second and a half ahead of Wladimir Montoya, in 1:58.30. Doughty completed the 100 free in 47.44, while Callaghan and George Mayer finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Smalley bested his nearest competitor by over six seconds in the 200 back. Chris Ginder dominated the 500 free, finishing in 4:55.56, over four seconds faster than Ross Gilbert of Centenary.

In the three-meter diving competition, Owen, Holcombe and Culbertson again turned in solid performances.

The 200 breast was strong for the Mustangs, as Plevelj and Jonathan Wojcik finished one-two, with exactly five seconds separating the two.

Book-ending the afternoon was the 200 free relay. Doughty, Fadnes, Hetland and Denham touched the wall in 1:25.02, nearly three seconds faster than Centenary's "A" relay team.

The Mustangs are back in action Nov. 3 as they host Air Force at Perkins Natatorium at 12 p.m. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
