COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS (SMU)--The Mustang men beat Texas A&M in the Art Adamson Invitational, 1462-1397, winning all but three events over the three-day meet. Three individual swimmers and one relay qualified for NCAA consideration Sunday.
Pontus Renholm qualified for NCAA consideration as he won the 200 back in 1:46.68, over four seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. In the 100 free, Luka Vrtovec won the event, clocking in at 43.61 and earning NCAA consideration. Alex Hetland finished second in the 200 breast, touching the wall at 2:00.17, qualifying for NCAA consideration. The 400 free relay team of Hetland, Thomas Fadnes, Renholm and Vrtovec also qualified for NCAA consideration, clocking in at 2:57.65.
Individually, the Mustangs performed well. In addition to Renholm's win in the 200 back, Maverick Smalley took fourth in that event, clocking in at 1:53.58. SMU finished one-two in the 100 free with Fadnes touching the wall just over a second behind Vrtovec in 44.65. The Mustangs also finished two-three in the 200 breast with Mitchell Johnson coming in at 2:02.63. In the 200 fly, Nate Clark took third, stopping the clock at 1:50.09 and Brett Denham came in right behind him in fourth place at 1:54.24.
Preston Holcombe dominated the platform diving event Sunday as he compiled a score of 344.60, over 81 points higher than his nearest competitor. Matthew Culbertson finished third in the platform with a score of 254.35.
