DALLAS (AP) -- Papa Dia scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds, and SMU broke a four-game slide to open the season with an 81-63 win over Paul Quinn on Tuesday night. Dia, who shot 8-of-12 from the floor, was among three SMU players with double-doubles. Ryan Harp had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Bamba Fall had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs (1-4). Jon Killen also scored in double figures with 13 points. Damien Chisholm scored 24 points for Paul Quinn (5-5) and Larry Ivey added 10.
The Mustangs dominated the boards and finished with a 32-rebound advantage (57-25). The Mustangs had 16 offensive rebounds and converted that into 23 second-chance points. Besides the three in double figures, Killen had seven boards, Alex Malone grabbed six, and Derrick Roberts collected five caroms.
Fall hit all three of his field goal attempts and was 5-of-8 at the free throw line. He also swatted two shots in the game to improve to 126 for his career, three behind Reggie Franklin for fourth in SMU history. SMU led by 20 with six minutes left in the first half and had a 49-39 edge at the break.
Paul Quinn got within three early in the second half before SMU went on a 10-0 run to make it 59-46. Paul Quinn never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
SMU shot 48 percent for the game while holding the Tigers to 34 percent.
The Mustangs next game is at UT-San Antonio on Saturday at 2 p.m. The next home game is when the TCU Horned Frogs visit Moody Coliseum for the State Farm DFW Duel on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
