DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and got a key steal from senior guard Sharee Shepherd in the final seconds to pull off a 59-57 win over The All-Stars in the final exhibition game of the season.
The Mustangs were led offensively by senior post Janielle Dodds, who had 10 points, and Shepherd and Elbie Gates, who added nine points apiece. Shepherd's all-around effort also included four rebounds and a game-high six steals.
SMU led by as many as 20 points in the first half, but the All-Stars got hot in the second half, hitting 62.5 percent of their shots from behind the three-point line after the intermission. They eventually tied up the game with 2:03 remaining. SMU went ahead on free throws by Shepherd and Dodds, and sealed the win when Shepherd and freshman guard LaShandra Hill trapped All-Stars guard Tasha Phillips - who had a game-high 27 points - near the sideline and forced a turnover.
The Mustangs won both exhibition games as they prepare for the upcoming season, and host No. 11 Texas A&M this Friday night at Moody Coliseum. For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
