DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team tips off the 2007-08 season at 7 p.m. tonight when the No. 11 Aggies of Texas A&M come to Moody Coliseum.
Tonight's game, which will be broadcast later on KKGM (1630 AM) on a tape-delay - the broadcast should begin shortly after 10 p.m. - is the 40th meeting between SMU and Texas A&M. The Aggies hold a 22-17 advantage in the series, but the Mustangs have won three of the last four and are 10-5 against Texas A&M under head coach Rhonda Rompola.
The Mustangs are going for their fourth consecutive victory on opening day. Last year's team beat Texas-San Antonio in the opener to begin a four-game winning streak at the beginning of the season.
The Ponies finished 18-12 last season and didn't lose any players to graduation. In addition, long-range shooter Katie Gross - who already is fourth on the school's list for three-pointers made - is back after redshirting in 2006, and the Mustangs have added three newcomers: guard Brittani Allen, a transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, and freshmen Haley Day and LaShandra Hill, who won MVP honors in the Texas 5A and 4A Tournament championship games.
This season also includes a chance for senior post Janielle Dodds to solidify her position in SMU history by making a run at the career scoring and rebounding records. Dodds has 1,367 career points, which is 418 points shy of Karlin Kennedy's school record of 1,785. She also has 725 career rebounds, and needs 222 this season to break Kennedy's career record of 946.
