DALLAS (AP) -- Mezie Uzochukwu hit two free throws with a second left Tuesday night as South Carolina Upstate rallied to defeat SMU 58-56.
SMU led 52-38 with 8:36 left before the Spartans used an 18-0 run over a six-minute stretch to take a 56-52 lead. SMU's Bamba Fall tied the game at 56-56 on a layup with 36 seconds left. Uzochukwu went to the line to shoot the winning free throws after he was fouled.
Luke Payne led South Carolina-Upstate (2-8) with 19 points, including 13 in the second half. Bobby Davis scored 10.
Fall led SMU (4-5) with 15 points, hitting 6-of-9 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws. He also had four blocked shots. Derrick Roberts added 11 points. Papa Dia topped the Mustangs with eight rebounds followed by six for Paulius Ritter. Roberts and Mike Walker had four assists a piece. Alex Malone totaled eight points and three rebounds.
SMU led 30-26 at the half.
The Mustangs have a quick turnaround as Prairie View A&M visits Moody Coliseum on Thursday at 7 p.m.
