ATHENS, Ga. (SMU) --- SMU's Lauren Hester led the Mustangs with a 153 points against the Georgia Bulldogs in an English-only dual meet at the Animal Science Arena on Saturday. The SMU equestrian team fell 10-4 in dual scoring, but only fell 1098-1048 in raw score. Hester had a 73-40 romp in fences and a one-point (81-80) loss in equitation on the flat.
The Mustangs outscored the Bulldogs fell 4-3 in equitation over fences to start the meet despite a 531-524 raw score advantage. Hester, Erica Buie, and Kathryn Garvie were the winners for the Mustangs. Buie edged Kelley Cowperthwait 79-78 and Garvie notched a 82-80 triumph over Mary Fulp. The most lopsided SMU win was Hester 73-40 over Haylie Jane. Sophomore Suzy Coughlin competed for the first time in an NCAA meet, scoring 40 points but riding well outside of one jump refusal.
Georgia closed the meet with a 6-1 score in equitation on the flat. Even then, SMU was only 57 points back in raw score, 574-517. The lone SMU win came as Kristen Collins rode past Kelly Bonau 75-74. Senior Lauren Hester was the high scorer for SMU and MVP on the flat with 80 points. Hester was nudged 81-80 by Georgia's Ashley Chandler.
The Mustangs are now 2-5 in dual meets, but have lost three times in raw score tiebreakers. The regular season concludes when South Carolina visits the Flower Mound Equestrian Center on April 1.
