Former Mustang Swimmer Jonathon Newton Takes Silver

BANGKOK, Thailand (SMU)-- Former Mustang swimmer Jonathon Newton won the silver medal today in the 50m freestyle event at the 2007 World University Games. Newton finished the race in 22.50, fifteen one-hundredths of a second behind the gold medalist.
Newton's medal-winning performance capped a solid showing by current and former SMU athletes at the Games. Former Mustang Flavia Rigamonti took gold in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events, setting new games records in both and a new Swiss record in the 800m. Current Pony Angela San Juan Cisneros took fourth in the 50m butterfly, just four one-hundredths of a second behind first place.
The swimming portion of 2007 World University Games wrapped up competition today, after six days of events. The summer and winter games are held every two years in various host cities around the world and are organized by the International University Sports Federation. The 2005 summer games, held in Izmir, Turkey, attracted 7,805 participants from 131 different countries. More information about the games can be found here.
