DALLAS (SMU) - SMU quarterback Justin Willis and wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Aldrick Robinson highlighted an exciting open scrimmage on Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium as SMU continues preparations for its ESPN-televised season opener on Sept. 3 against Texas Tech.
Willis was 17-of-20 for 264 yards and two scores, while Sanders hauled in eight passes for 126 yards. Robinson, a true freshman, created a buzz among Mustang fans as the Waxahachie native caught four balls for 74 yards including a 50-yard TD reception. Zack Sledge caught Willis' other TD, this one from 20 yards. Columbus Givens also had a solid night with seven catches for 41 yards.
In the battle for the back-up quarterback spot, Zach Rhodes went 5-of-8 for 20 yards and Logan Turner was 4-of-6 for 30 yards.
On the ground, DeMyron Martin was impressive, gaining 48 yards on just three carries, while Jessie Henderson and Bryan McCann were spectacular on kickoff returns.
Thomas Morstead was 6-of-7 on field goal tries, hitting for 32, 37, 37, 42, 42 and 47. His only miss was from 44 yards. His punting was also solid, as he averaged over 54 yards a punt on four tries, with a long of 65.
Defensively, freshmen Ryan Leonard (two) and Anthony Sowe (one) notched sacks.
In addition to Texas Tech, SMU also hosts North Texas (Sept. 8), UTEP (Sept. 29), Tulane (Oct. 20), Rice (Nov. 10), and UCF (Nov. 17) at home this season in Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
