DALLAS (SMU)-- The Mustangs kicked off their 2007 season in style, taking their first match, 3-0, over Western Carolina University as part of the SMU Invitational Friday night at Moody Coliseum.
The freshmen shone brightly, as newcomers Caitlin Adair and Kathryn Wilkerson made their Mustang debuts and immediately impacted the team. Adair led the squad in hitting with .588 on the night, while Wilkerson made her first collegiate double-double, leading the team in kills (17) and coming in second to libero Candice Davis in digs with 12.
Davis picked up where she left off last season, leading the Mustangs with 20 digs on the night. Senior outside hitter and captain Caitlin Rainbird also registered a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs hit .256 for the match and garnered 55 total kills and 59 total digs. In the second game, the squad hit an outstanding .515, overpowering Western Carolina, who hit only .200 on the game.
The Ponies are back in action Saturday as they face McNeese State at 1 p.m. and Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. to wrap up the SMU Invitational. For the complete tournament schedule, visit SMUMustangs.com.
