DALLAS (SMU)-- The Mustangs won their first match of Saturday, 3-0, over McNeese State, their second win in as many matches as play continues in the SMU Invitational at Moody Coliseum. SMU improves to 2-0 with the win.
Senior outside hitter and captain Rachel Giubilato made her season debut in the early match, nailing a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs to pace the offense. Junior Natalie Peters notched 17 kills in the match and led the team in hitting with .371. Sophomore libero Candice Davis contributed a team-best 20 digs on the afternoon, while senior captain Caitlin Rainbird added another 19.
The Mustangs outhit the Cowgirls by a wide margin in games one (.211) and two (.216), with the Cowgirls only hitting .051 as a team in game one and .148 in game two.
The SMU Invitational continues this afternoon, with a match between McNeese State and Western Carolina University at 4:30 p.m.. SMU will take on Eastern Illinois University in the nightcap at 7:00 p.m. For the complete season schedule and results, log on to www.SMUMustangs.com.
