DALLAS (SMU)-- The SMU volleyball team beat Eastern Illinois in a five-game thriller, 3-2 (31-33, 25-30, 30-20, 30-23, 15-8) to win the SMU Invitational. Junior setter Stefanie Kons took home MVP honors, while sophomore Candice Davis was named Best Libero and junior middle blocker Natalie Peters was selected to the All-Tournament team.
Kons notched 146 assists over the three matches this weekend, averaging 13.27 per game. She had 65 assists in the match against Eastern Illinois, which helped the Mustangs clinch the title. Davis again paced the Ponies in digs with 26 against Eastern Illinois, 66 for the weekend. Peters had the second-highest kill total against the Panthers with 20.
Three Mustangs notched double-doubles on the evening. Senior outside hitter Rachel Giubilato paced the offense with 29 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Kathryn Wilkerson tallied notched 11 kills and 16 digs. Kons had 65 assists and 10 digs to round out the Mustang defense.
As a team, the Mustangs hit .322 on the evening and managed to hold the Panthers under .200 in games three, four and five.
SMU is back in action next weekend in the Texas Tech Invitational, where they'll take on Lamar University on Friday, Aug. 31 at 4:00 p.m. The Mustangs will then play a day-night double-header Saturday Sept. 1 against Villanova at 10:00 a.m. and against tournament host Texas Tech at 7:00 p.m.
