MADISON, Wisc. (SMU) - Battling rough weather, the SMU women's golf team fought their way to a fourth-place finish in the season-opening Badger Invitational at the par-72, 6,175-yard University Ridge Course on Monday.
The last 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament were cancelled due to unplayable conditions. With about two holes to go, play was suspended pending an improvement in conditions on the greens. A steady rain created water pooling on several greens rendering them unputtable. The weather did not improve enough to allow the tournament to continue.
Lacey Jones notched a top-10 finish with a 36-hole total of 6-over 150 (76-74), while Kate Ackerson (76-76-T13) and Paige Martin (76-78-T20) both scored top-20 results. Freshmen Tia Gannon (79-83-T42) and Stephanie Hwang (82-81-T47) rounded out the SMU squad.
As a team, SMU went 307-309 to place fourth in the 12-team field.
"Forty-five degrees and rain is brutal golf weather," said SMU Head Coach Todd Selders. "After losing three seniors, we were trying out a new line-up and shaking off the rust a bit, but I was proud of the girls for hanging tough."
