DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU volleyball team is back on track, defeating UTSA in three straight games Tuesday night (30-20, 30-22, 30-20), improving their record to 8-3.
Two Mustangs recorded double-doubles on the evening. Senior outside hitter Rachel Giubilato notched her eighth double-double, with 16 kills and 13 digs, while junior setter Stefanie Kons had 33 assists and 10 digs.
SMU dominated the first game, hitting .413 as a team and holding the Roadrunners to only .149. The Mustangs led the Roadrunners in kills 21-13. SMU took the first five points before UTSA finally got on the board. The Roadrunners simply could not keep up, as the Mustangs continued to gain momentum and finally put the game away, 30-20.
The Roadrunners entered game two with more energy and spark. The two teams traded points for the first six points, staying within a point of each other. But the Mustangs broke away quickly on a kill by sophomore libero Candice Davis and never looked back. The offensive pressure proved too great for the Roadrunners, and SMU took the game, 30-22.
In game three, the Mustangs jumped out to an early lead they never relinquished. Though UTSA was able to keep the score close for the first five points, the Mustangs thwarted the Roadrunners' advances and relied on solid defensive work by sophomore Kendra Kahanek and senior Caitlin Rainbird. The Mustangs never allowed UTSA within three points. SMU won the game, 30-20.
The Mustangs hit the road this weekend to take on Syracuse, Holy Cross and New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Invitational Friday and Saturday.
