IRVING, Texas - Former SMU defensive end Justin Rogers was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and placed on their 53-man roster. Rogers had spent training camp with the New England Patriots, who had selected the Greenville native in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
In 2006, Rogers helped anchor an SMU defense that ranked as tops in the conference in rushing defense, sacks and tackles-for-loss. Individually, Rogers ranked second in sacks and third in tackles-for-loss. Following the season, Rogers led Team Texas with seven tackles, including three for-loss and 1.5 sacks in the inaugural Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Bowl.
The Cowboys open their season on Sept. 9 when they host the New York Giants.
