NEW ORLEANS (SMU)-- Sophomore Candice Davis led the Mustangs' defense with 17 digs, while freshman Caitlin Adair paced the offense in Sunday's loss to Conference USA leader Tulane, 3-0 (25-30, 18-30, 29-31). The Mustangs fall to 11-7 (1-3 in the conference), and the Green Wave improves to 15-3 (5-0 conference).
Along with her 17 digs, Davis also had two kills, one assist and one service ace to lead the Mustangs' defensive effort. Adair hit .353 on the afternoon, with eight kills on 17 attempts. As a team, SMU tallied 10 block assists and one block solo by Adair.
The Mustangs nearly took game three from the Green Wave. SMU jumped out to a quick lead and built on it, eventually leading by four points. Tulane crept back, tying the game at eight all. The two teams traded points, seeing four ties, but no lead changes until the Green Wave took the advantage with their 14th point. But Tulane was unable to put more than three points between themselves and the Mustangs and SMU called a timeout to regroup. The Mustangs initially cut the Green Wave's lead to one, but Tulane built up another four-point lead, forcing SMU into their second timeout of the game. SMU came back and got within one point of the Green Wave, forcing Tulane into their first timeout. After the timeout, the Mustangs tied the game at 28 apiece, and then scored the go-ahead point. But the Green Wave rallied, taking the next three points and putting the game out of reach.
In the second game, Tulane scored first, but the Mustangs quickly responded and took the lead, 5-2. SMU's lead was short-lived, however, as the Green Wave took the next eight points in a row, driving the score to 10-5. Though the Mustangs twice got within two points, they were unable to catch the Green Wave. Tulane held the advantage in kills, 16-9.
Game one saw six ties and six lead changes as the teams battled for control. The teams traded the first four points of the game until the Green Wave took the first lead. They held on through several points, but the Mustangs fought back to a tie, 10-10. The Green Wave tried to pull away again, but SMU was able to tie it again, 16-16. The teams remained close though the next 17 points, with Tulane unable to put more than three points between them. But the Green Wave took five of the game's last seven points to put it away.
The Mustangs are back in action this weekend at Moody Coliseum as they host Rice on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Houston on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. For complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
