DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU volleyball team fell in three close games to Mississippi in the SMU/Radisson Invitational at Moody Coliseum on Friday. The Mustangs are now 6-2 on the season after being swept 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-25). The Rebels, who are receiving votes in the current CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll, improved to 9-0.
Despite the loss, two Mustangs notched double-doubles on the evening. Senior outside hitter Rachel Giubilato had 16 kills and 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Kathryn Wilkerson had 11 kills and 14 digs. Junior setter Stefanie Kons had 41 assists and nine digs, missing a double-double by one dig.
SMU was held to only .114 hitting over the three games. Giubilato led the offense, hitting a team-best .256. Four Mustangs had 10 or more digs, including 14 by sophomore libero Candice Davis.
The Rebels managed two more blocks than the Mustangs, which made a difference in the match. Ole Miss out-hit SMU, .238 to .114 and tallied more assists (47-44) and more kills (50-47).
The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow in day two of the SMU Radisson Invitational, facing Prairie View A&M at 1:00 p.m. and Baylor at 7:00 p.m. The SMU football team also plays Saturday, so fans are encouraged to park in the DART lot at Mockingbird Station and take the free shuttle to Moody Coliseum.
