GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team got 21 points from senior center Janielle Dodds, 15 from sophomore forward Brittany Gilliam and 14 from sophomore guard Jillian Samuels, and senior guard Katy Cobb hit two free throws with 24.1 seconds left in overtime to lead the Mustangs to a 73-68 victory Friday night at East Carolina.
Cobb also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for the Ponies, who beat the Lady Pirates for the first time in four meetings.
The Mustangs withstood a sizzling start in each half by the Lady Pirates, who stretched a four-point halftime advantage into a 13-point lead with 14:45 remaining in the second half. But the Mustangs tightened up their defense in the second half, limiting ECU to 30 percent shooting, to force the extra session.
Sophomore forward/post Alice Severin hit a pair of baskets in the overtime period to lead the SMU offense, and ECU hit just 2-of-10 shots from the floor in the extra session as the Mustangs improved to 13-4 on the season and 2-1 against Conference USA opponents. ECU slipped to 6-11 overall, and 0-4 against C-USA.
The Mustangs now head to Huntington, W.V., where they will face Marshall University in a game that can be heard at 1 p.m. (central time) Sunday afternoon on KKGM (1630 AM).
