KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) - The SMU women's golf team wrapped up the 12th-annual Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at Fox Den Country Club on Sunday, finishing in 16th place. SMU's hopes of jumping up the leaderboard over the final 18 were hurt when senior Kate Ackerson, who entered the day in the hunt for medalist honors, was forced to withdraw from the final round due to an injury.
SMU finished at 918 after recording a final-round 307. Sarah Dodson was SMU's top player on the final day, shooting 72 and finishing tied for 54th. Ackerson withdrew due to a wrist injury and will be sidelined through the rest of the fall.
"It was disheartening for Kate to have to withdraw, but her teammates really stepped up and helped us today," said SMU Head Coach Todd Selders. "We should actually move up in the regional rankings after this event and that's a huge credit to this young team. I know Kate will really work hard in rehabbing this injury over the next few months and hopefully she'll be back better than ever in the spring."
LSU won the team event at 865 and N.C. State's Lauren Doughtie claimed medalist honors at 209.
