DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (9-8, 2-2) faltered against the Rice Owls (10-3, 2-1) Friday night in Fox Gymnasium falling in three sets (25-22, 25-15,25-19). The Mustangs' high performer on offense was Sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson who ended the match with 12 kills and a .344 hitting percentage. On defense, freshman libero Sidney Stewart recorded 14 digs, while three Mustangs recorded two blocks each.
The third set loss closed out the match for the Mustangs though Wilkerson contributed seven kills and a solo block. SMU ended the match with 33 kills, 40 digs, and six blocks.
The Mustangs wavered early in the second set and were unable to turn their play around due to a near perfect Rice performance which was devoid of service and ball-handling errors. Despite the loss, freshman Jessica Oliver delivered three kills and one block.
In the first set, Wilkerson led the offense with five kills, followed by Junior Kendra Kahanek who produced four. Kahanek also added two blocks defensively for the set.
The Mustangs look to improve their conference record against the Houston Cougars (7-7, 0-2) on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
