DENTON, Texas (SMU)-SMU volleyball (10-9, 2-3 C-USA) reversed roles with North Texas (3-14, 1-3 Sun Belt West) Tuesday night bullying the Mean Green around in a close three set (26-24, 25-22, 27-25) win at the Mean Green Volleyball Center. Senior Natalie Peters shone on offense recording an outstanding 12 kills and a .647 hitting percentage. On defense, three Mustangs dug eight balls, while Junior Kendra Kahanek secured the net with 3.5 blocks.
In the thrilling third set that included 11 ties, Sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson earned half of her final 12 kills registering six and a .462 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Kelli Becerra resolved to make defense just as important as running the offense leading the team in digs for the set with six.
Peters was perfect on offense going four-for-four in kills en route to a second set win. Teammates Kahanek and freshman Jessica Oliver handled the Mean Green offense effectively combining for the Mustangs' three stuff blocks of the set and helping to hold North Texas to a mediocre .061 hitting percentage.
On their way to a first set triumph, three Mustangs hit above .400 including senior Stefanie Kons who ended the match with two kills and no errors. Kons also led the team in assists ending with 17. Kahanek and Wilkerson teamed up at the net for two stuff blocks, while Peters and Oliver connected to take care of another Mean Green offensive attack for a point.
The Mustangs will return home this weekend to Moody Coliseum and take on conference foes UTEP (5-12, 1-3) and Tulane (11-4, 3-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m., respectively.
