DALLAS (SMU) - Junior forward Delisha Wills scored a team-high 19 points to pace four Mustangs in double figures, but it was not enough as the SMU women's basketball team fell in its season opener, 85-79, to Texas Arlington Friday night at Moody Coliseum.
In addition to Wills, who also had a team-high 10 rebounds to post her first double-double of the year (after recording five last season), the Mustangs got 13 points from sophomore guard LaShandra Hill and 12 each from juniors Brittany Gilliam and Jillian Samuels.
Candice Champion led all scorers with 20 points for UTA, while Meghan Nelson had 19, Erin Dixon had 17 and Shalyn Martin 15.
Wills' 10 rebounds also led the Mustangs, who got nine from Gilliam and six each from Hill and junior Alice Severin. Hill added a game-high four steals, while Severin also chipped in a pair of blocked shots.
The Mustangs play next Friday, Nov. 21, at Arkansas and then Nov. 24 at Eastern Illinois, before returning home the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28) to face Sam Houston State in the first round of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament at Moody Coliseum. All SMU games can be heard on KAAM (770 AM).
