DALLAS (SMU)-SMU volleyball (14-16, 6-10 C-USA) stormed past the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (21-10, 8-8 C-USA) on Sunday in a four set match (19-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center that is to be aired on CBS C Tuesday. Junior Mustang Kendra Kahanek played phenomenally on the defensive end, recording 17 block assists and setting a career-high in the win. Kahanek also recorded a double-double as she put away 11 kills. The Mustang block tied the team match record in total blocks set earlier this season with 20.
In the fourth set, Kahanek and freshman Jessica Oliver combined for subsequent stuff blocks at 5-2, effectively giving Kahanek her second double-double on the season. Kahanek then assisted teammate senior Stefanie Kons for another stuff keeping SMU in the lead 12-10. Tulsa tied it up 14-14 as hitter Hodge recorded back to back kills. Wilkerson put away a kill and assisted in a block to pull the Mustangs ahead 18-16. Kahanek closed out the set for the match win with a trio of block assists.
Returning from the half, SMU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as freshman Kelli Becerra set up Kahanek to blast a couple of back to back kills in the third set. Becerra contributed with an ace, shortly after. A couple Oliver kills and Tulsa attack errors later, SMU extended the lead 12-5. A stuff block by sophomore Kathryn Wilkerson and senior Natalie Peters put the Mustangs up by 12, where they remained to the end of the set for the win.
Oliver and Kahanek led the offense in the second set for a combined eight kills. Oliver would end the match with nine kills and nine blocks for a solid all-around performance. Tied up for most of the second set, Oliver finally grabbed the lead with a kill off a Becerra assist at 14-12. The Mustangs went on to win the set after multiple blocks.
SMU dropped the first set after struggling defensively against the Tulsa attack. Golden Hurricanes Hodge and Jennifer Eichler led the attack recording six and four kills, respectively. Kahanek recorded three block assists in the loss.
The Mustangs have completed conference play for the 2008-09 season and will head to Memphis for C-USA tournament play on Thursday. Competition times and match-ups are still to be announced.
