DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team outscored Sam Houston State 38-14 in the paint and enjoyed a 51-35 rebounding advantage to breeze to a 73-52 victory over Sam Houston State Friday night in the first round of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament at Moody Coliseum.
Juniors Delisha Wills and Brittany Gilliam led the Mustangs with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman post Christine Elliott tied sophomore guard LaShandra Hill with nine points and tied Wills with eight rebounds, trailing only the nine boards pulled down by sophomore Haley Day. Day also handed out a game-high five assists; Hill added four.
The victory was the first of the season for the Mustangs, who now face UNC-Charlotte in the championship game. UNC-C advanced by virtue of a 70-69 victory over Fresno State in the first game Friday night.
The Mustangs now have won nine of 10 meetings with Sam Houston State, including the last eight straight. SMU won its only previous meeting with UNC-Charlotte.
