EL PASO, Texas (SMU)-SMU volleyball (13-16, 5-10 C-USA) lost in the three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) Sunday to the Miners of UTEP (7-21, 3-11 C-USA) in Memorial Gym. Sophomore Mustang Kathryn Wilkerson led the offense with 11 kills, as well as the defense with nine digs. Junior Kendra Kahanek was also productive on both ends, registering four total blocks and 8 kills for a .300 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Stefanie Kons contributed to the offense recording four kills, despite the help the Mustang attack failed to gain momentum and ended with a .152 hitting efficiency. However, the Miners defense was in full force and aided in curtailing SMU's offensive efforts, as UTEP recorded 53 total digs and averaged close to 18 digs a set.
The Mustangs defense struggled against a productive Miner's offense, as three Miners recorded over .300 hitting percentages. UTEP's Amy Sanders had an exceptional match hitting .545 for seven kills and picking up the defensive load with 20 digs.
The Mustangs will look to end conference strong against Tulsa (21-8, 8-6 C-USA) on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in their final match of the 2008-09 season heading into C-USA tournament play.
