SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (SMU) - Junior Brittany Gilliam had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, and freshman post Christine Elliott added a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the SMU women's basketball team fell, 67-65, to Jacksonville in the first round of the South Padre Island Shootout.
The Mustangs will face Virginia Tech at 5 p.m., Saturday in the consolation game, which can be heard live on KAAM (770 AM). Virginia Tech (6-3) lost to IUPUI in the tournament's first game.
The Mustangs trailed, 33-28, at halftime, but steadily closed the gap in the second half. A pair of late three-pointers from junior guard Jillian Samuels pulled SMU to within a point, but the Ponies were forced to foul in order to stop the clock.
The Mustangs also got eight points from junior post Alice Severin and seven from sophomore guard Haley Day, and two points and two rebounds from transfer post Heidi Brandenburg in her SMU debut.
