SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (SMU) - Brittany Gilliam posted her second double-double of the season with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the SMU women's basketball team to a 63-56 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday night in the second round of the South Padre Island Shootout at the South Padre Island Convention Center.
The victory pulls the Mustangs' record to 5-6 on the season, and gave each team a victory in the all-time series between the schools.
Gilliam led three Mustangs scoring in double figures. Freshman post Christine Elliott scored a career-high 13 points for the second game in a row, and junior guard Jillian Samuels added 10 points, including two three-pointers that gave her at least two from long range for the eighth time in the Mustangs' first 11 games.
SMU played one of its best defensive games of the season Saturday, holding the Hokies without a single field goal until more than 10 minutes had passed at the start of the game and generated 26 points off Virginia Tech turnovers compared to just 13 points off turnovers by the Hokies. But perhaps the most telling statistic was at the free throw line, where SMU blistered the nets on 19-of-21 shooting (90.5 percent), compared to Tech's 52.6 percent shooting (10-of-19).
The Mustangs will return to the court at 2 p.m., Dec. 28, when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Moody Coliseum. For ticket information and a complete schedule, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
