DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore forward Delisha Wills scored 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and junior forward Elbie Gates had her first double-doluble of her career to lead the SMU women's basketball team to a 93-49 victory before a crowd of 875 at Moody Coliseum.
The victory improved the Mustangs' record to 18-6 overall and 8-3 against Conference USA opponents. Memphis slid to 7-17 overall and 4-7 in C-USA games.
The Mustangs were consistent from the start of the game, shooting 51.4 percent from the floor in each half. Senior guard Katy Cobb had 14 points and Gates had 13, to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds.
SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said the team has been focusing on defending opponents' perimeter shots, and the Mustangs took it to heart Thursday night, limiting the Lady Tigers to 3-of-17 shooting on three-pointers.
Thursday's game marked SMU's entry in the nationwide "Think Pink" initiative, created last year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to help raise awareness and show support as a community against breast cancer, the second-leading cause of death for all women and the leading overall cause of death in women between the ages of 20-59. The Mustangs showed their support by wearing pink "Pony Up! for the Cure" T-shirts during warm-ups, while the visiting Lady Tigers wore pink shoe laces. The SMU coaches, band and cheer and pom squads also wore pink apparel.
A portion of the proceeds from a recently-completed on-line auction and the sale of "Pony Up! for the Cure" T-shirts will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Dallas County.
The Mustangs now go on the road to face the UAB at 2 p.m. Sunday in a game that can be heard on KKGM (1630 AM). For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
