BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team won its fifth consecutive road game for the first time in 19 years and senior forward Sharee Shepherd set a new SMU record for steals in a game with nine as the Mustangs rolled to a 84-51 win over the UAB Blazers in Birmingham.
The victory improves the Mustangs' record to 19-6 overall and 9-3 in Conference USA and moves the Ponies into sole possession of second place in the conference with four regular-season games to go. The Blazers fell to 12-13 overall and 8-4 in C-USA games.
Every active player for the Mustangs scored for the second consecutive game, including five who reached double figures: senior guard Katy Cobb led the balanced offense with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Shepherd and sophomores Delisha Wills and Brittany Gilliam had 12 points apiece, and senior Janielle Dodds had 10.
Shepherd broke the steals record with seven in the first half and two more in the second. She had eight steals Nov. 20 in SMU's victory over TCU to tie the mark set previously by former SMU greats Suzanne McAnally (twice), Angela Crooks, Wendy Trusky and current SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola. Sunday was the ninth time she had at least five steals in a game this season.
Shepherd also had 11 rebounds to go with her 12 points, and Dodds had 13 rebounds to go with her 10 points, giving the Ponies two players with a double-double for the first time this season.
The Mustangs now return home for the final two home games of the season, at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Rice Owls and at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon against the Houston Cougars. For ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
