DALLAS (AP) -- Robert Vaden scored 24 points to lead UAB to a 73-59 win over SMU on Saturday night.
Vaden's points came on eight 3-pointers, a school record. Reggie Huffman scored 13 points and hauled down 14 rebounds for the Blazers (19-8, 9-3 Conference USA). Channing Toney added 11 points.
Jon Killen scored 21 points to lead SMU (8-17, 2-10). Bamba Fall added 14 points, and Papa Dia had nine points and 11 rebounds.
UAB outrebounded the Mustangs 46-34. The Blazers shot 44 percent from the field for the game, while SMU shot just 33 percent.
SMU led 32-29 at the break before being outscored 44-27 in the second half.
The Mustangs are at East Carolina on Wednesday before hosting UTEP on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Matt Doherty, SMU HEAD COACH "I was proud of our guys to be in a position, with our record, to come into a game against a team like UAB, a talented team like UAB, and be in a position deep into the second half to win. I'm very proud of our team and we did that despite of a poor shooting performance."
On the character and resilience of this team: "I don't think it's surprising because we recruit that. Character is a big thing we look at in the recruiting process. When you have guys like Jon Killen as your captain, he only knows one way and that's the right way and that's coming out and working hard."
Jon Killen, SMU SENIOR GUARD On Robert Vaden: "It can be discouraging. We played great defense on him I think. He was one for six in the first half and we come out and were pretty much in his face the whole second half and then he pulled up from 25 feet in transition When a guy's got a shot like that you don't know what to do - he's just a great player making great shots. When a guy's making shots like that you just hope he misses the next one."
Papa Dia, SMU FRESHMAN FORWARD On Jon Koncak speaking to the team: "When you grab the ball inside you have to have confidence to make the shot and being a freshman, getting the ball inside I am a bit tentative because I don't want to miss the shot."
MIKE DAVIS, UAB HEAD COACH "SMU did a great job in the first half, they kept us off balance. I think when Robert Vaden kind of struggled in the first half shooting the ball I think it really effected our team's psyche. Because we didn't move the ball, we didn't cut hard, but in the second half I thought we stayed with it and we moved the ball. We had six assists in the first half and then we doubled that in the second half so we did a better job of passing the basketball. And when Robert Vaden made his seven shots in a row that was enough. But I thought that SMU did a great job."
