EL PASO, TEXAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team battled back from a double-digit first-half deficit to take a second-half lead over the No. 19 UTEP Miners in the second half, but the rally fell short as UTEP hung on for a 76-63 win at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 21-7 overall and 11-4 in Conference USA games, while UTEP improved to 24-2, 14-0. The teams, who went to overtime the first time they met in Dallas, will enter next week's Conference USA tournament in Orlando as the top two seeds.
Senior post Janielle Dodds had 11 points and seven rebounds to pull to within three of Karlin Kennedy's career records in each category. Sophomore forward Brittany Gilliam had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. UTEP got 22 points from Jareica Hughes and 21 from Natasha Lacy.
The Mustangs will try to improve upon their school-record 21 regular-season victories in their final game of the regular season at 5 p.m. (central time) Saturday at Tulane in a game that can be seen live on CSTV and heard on KKGM (1630 AM).
