HOUSTON, TEXAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team got 17 points apiece from sophomore forward Brittany Gilliam and senior post Janielle Dodds and used a 13-2 run at the end of the first half to blow the game open en route to 74-51 victory over the University of Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion.
With the victory, the Ponies improve to 17-6 on the season and 7-3 in Conference USA games. It also completed the second sweep of a two-game road trip for this season for the Mustangs, who won at East Carolina Jan. 18 and at Marshall Jan. 20. The victories over ECU, Marshall, Rice and Houston give SMU sweeps of road trips against conference opponents for the first time in the 33-year history of the program.
SMU is now 11 games over .500 for the first time since starting the 2004-05 season by winning 12 of the first 13 games.
The 17-point performance by Gilliam capped a strong weekend for the sophomore from Tyler, who led the Mustangs with 18 points in their 70-68 overtime victory over Rice. Sharee Shepherd led the Mustangs with 13 rebounds and five steals - the eighth game this year in which she had at least five thefts.
The Mustangs now return home to face Memphis at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Moody Coliseum. For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
