EDMOND, Okla. (SMU)--The No. 61 SMU women's tennis team coasted to a 5-2 win over Oklahoma State Saturday in Edmond, Okla. The Mustangs remain perfect through three weeks of play, boasting a 5-0 record, while the Cowgirls drop to 3-1.
The Mustangs started by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Natalia Bubien paired with Pavi Francis at No. 1, and defeated Yawna Allen and Nataliya Shatkovskaya, 8-6. Kseniia Tokarieva and Nicole Briceno picked up the decisive win at No. 2, beating Iryna Tkachenko and JoAnne Karaitiana, 8-6. At No. 3, Kristen Reid and Monica Neveklovska dropped their match to Sasha Belova and Maryna Tkachenko, 8-6.
In singles, Bubien remains undefeated this season, beating I. Tkachenko in the first slot, 6-1, 6-7 (8), 6-2. Francis dropped her match at No. 2 to Allen, 4-6, 6-7 (4). In the third position, Tokarieva continued her dominant 5-0 season, taking her match against Shatkovskaya in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Neveklovska improved her singles record, beating Karaitiana, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Reid stumbled at No. 5, losing a hard-fought match to Belova, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6. Briceno finished the day for the Mustangs by picking up a win at No. 6, 6-2, 7-5.
