NORMAN, OKLA. (SMU) - Midfielder Bruno Guarda scored the game's lone goal 30 minutes into the first half to lead the SMU men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory March 22 over the Kansas City Wizards' reserves.
Guarda, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy (given annually to the nation's top player) as a junior, put the Ponies on the scoreboard about 30 minutes into the game when he buried a pass from fellow midfielder Jeff Harwell.
At the other end, goalkeeper Craig Hill - who will be a junior in the fall and is battling Jonathan Lester to replace Steve Sandbo as the team's starting goalkeeper - turned in a sterling performance between the pipes, recording several outstanding saves to shut out the Wizards' reserves.
The victory kept the Mustangs undefeated this spring against professional competition; the Ponies also pitched a shutout in their other spring game, battling FC Dallas to a scoreless draw Feb. 26.
Up next for the Ponies is a game against the FC Dallas reserves, at 10 a.m., April 13, at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco.
