Mustangs Fall To UIW

DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Soccer fell 2-1 against UIW at Washburne Stadium on Monday.
 
The Mustangs dominated 65 percent of possession and posted a season-high of 22 shots, but fell short in their sixth match of the season.
 
SMU was down 1-0 at halftime before Mukisa Emmanuel leveled the scoreline to 1-1 by converting a penalty kick that he won in the match's final stages.
 
UIW scored with less than five minutes left on the clock, and the visitors took home the 2-1 win.
 
SMU is now 3-2-1 heading into Atlantic Coast Conference play.
 
How It Happened
SMU dominated possession as soon as the kick-off whistle blew, but Incarnate Word was first to take the lead.
 
The Cardinals went on a quick counter. Bryce Tober scored the goal off a rebound in the 14th minute.
 
The Mustangs grew into the game in the first half's final minutes. Creating chances through Fredrik Skilberg and Charles-Emile Brunet, but Incarnate Word held the lead at the end of the first half.
 
SMU had a quick start to the second half. Daniel Escorcia beat his opponent to get into the penalty box and aimed a shot to the low left corner of the goal, but the Cardinals' goalkeeper punched it away.
 
The Mustangs outshot the Cardinals seven to one in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but they did not find a breakthrough.
 
In a physical second half that saw three yellow card bookings, SMU won a penalty kick in the 79th minute of the match.
 
Emmanuel pounced on Milton Lopez's saved shot but was held back by UIW's goalkeeper. Emmanuel took the spot kick and converted to equalize the scoreline.
 
UIW's Noe Robles scored the winner for the visitors in the 87th minute with a shot outside the penalty box.
 
The scoreline was 2-1 for the visitors at full-time.
 
Other Notes
  • SMU took its first loss against UIW. The record is now 6-1-0
  • Mukisa Emmanuel scored his first penalty kick goal for SMU and his third goal for the program.
  • The Mustangs took a season-high of 22 shot attempts.
  • SMU outshot the Cardinals 22 to 10 and had 65 percent of the possession.
