Omaha, Neb. (SMU)--The SMU varsity crews won two races at the Midwest Intercollegiate Rowing Championship hosted by Creigton. The Mustangs took home second place as a team, after getting edged 94-93 by conference rival Tulsa.
The first gold medal of the day for SMU came in the varsity four B race, when the Mustang crew of coxswain Emily St. John, Kelly McKinley, Alex Austin, Alexa Tuszynski and Ellen Cieszkiewicz rowed to a 5:31.7 finish, over 13 seconds faster than second-place Murray State.
The Mustangs' second gold of the day came in the varsity four C event. Coxswain Emily Van Volkinburg led Danielle Nehf, Caitlin Ludwig, Nicolle Keogh and Lauren Hadaway to a 6:43.2 time, edging Tulsa by about a half a length.
The varsity and second varsity eights each took home silver. The varsity eight boat of Meredith Walter, Krystal Kulka, Tuszynski, Austin, Hannah Hansing, Julie Pollard, Amanda DeGroff, Lauren Doucet and coxswain Elizabeth Hagerty crossed the line at 5:31.45, just four seconds behind Creighton. SMU's second varsity eight was coxed by St. John and consisted of McKinley, Bianca Medici, Katelyn Verner, Chantal Bohren, Ashley Luther, Cieszkiewicz, Janice Merideth and Caroline Merideth. The Mustang 2V8 finished in 5:29.09, the Mustangs' fastest time of the day, and was less than five seconds behind Tulsa.
In the varsity four A race, SMU finished third, crossing the line in 6:15.69. Less than eight seconds separated first through third places in that event.
SMU's novice four A of coxswain Ali Smith, Walter, Medici, Verner and Doucet took second in their race, crossing the line in 6:43.69. The novice four B of coxswain Torre Kean, Alex Hazleton, Sofia Davydova. Lindsay Graff and Rebekah James finished second in their race, clocking a time of 8:04.39.
Creighton avenged an early-season loss to the Mustangs in the novice eight race. SMU had taken a commanding win over the Jays in March, with the novice eight beating the Creighton crew by over 18 seconds. Saturday, however, the Jays pulled off a three-second victory over the Mustangs. Coxswain Smith led Medici, Hadaway, Keogh, Kean, James, Hazleton, Davydova and Graff to a 6:06.3 finish, but the crew was edged by Creighton.
The Mustangs will enjoy nearly three weeks off before heading back to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the South/Central Regional Championships, May 17-18. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
