AUSTIN (SMU)--The SMU rowing team turned in several solid performances against perennial powerhouse Texas, but was unable to overturn the Longhorns on Lady Bird Lake.
The Mustangs were met with perfect rowing conditions in Austin and came out strong, but the Longhorns were simply too much for SMU to handle.
The closest contest of the day was the first varsity four. Emily Van Volkinburg coxed her boat of Meredith Walter, Chantal Bohren, Bianca Medici and Caroline Merideth to an 8:04.7 finish, less than eight seconds behind Texas' varsity four, which finished in 7:56.8.
The 2V8 of coxswain Emily St. John, Medici, Lauren Doucet, Danielle Nehf, Bohren, Ashley Luther, Caroline Merideth, and M. Merideth crossed the line in 7:18.4, just 13 seconds behind the `Horns.
In the 1V8, SMU's crew of coxswain Elizabeth Hagerty, Kelly McKinley, Krystal Kulka, Alexa Tuszynski, Ales Austin, Katelyn Verner, Ellen Cieszkiewicz, Amanda DeGroff and Julie Pollard rowed the course in the fastest SMU time of the day, finishing in 7:05.2. The Longhorns pulled in at 6:48.6, the fastest time of the day.
The Mustangs have two weeks off to get ready for the SIRA, April 19-20 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. For the complete schedule and results, log on to SMUMustangs.com.
