DALLAS (SMU) - Reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Brittany Gilliam posted her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the SMU women's basketball team to an 80-73 victory over C-USA foe East Carolina Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
Gilliam also led the Mustangs in assists with seven and steals with six.
Two other SMU players scored in double figures: Junior guard Jillian Samuels hit a pair of three-pointers en route to 13 points, and junior forward Delisha Wills added 12.
The Mustangs dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lady Pirates, 45-29, and outscored ECU, 10-2, on fast break points.
The victory improved SMU's record to 9-7 on the season, and 2-1 in Conference USA games. One of the heavyweights in C-USA, East Carolina fell to 10-6 overall, and 1-2 in C-USA games.
The Ponies now head to Tulsa, Okla., next Sunday for a 2 p.m. rematch with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, who SMU beat, 67-56, Jan. 3 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs and Golden Hurricane have met 29 times before, with SMU enjoying a 19-10 advantage in the all-time series between the schools after beating Tulsa last week.
