NEW ORLEANS, La. (SMU) - Sophomore forward Haley Day had the first double-double of her career, with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and was one of three players who scored in double figures as the SMU women's basketball team pulled out a 59-56 Thursday night over Conference USA rival Tulane at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans.
The victory improved the Mustangs' record to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA games. Tulane slipped to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in C-USA games. Beating Tulane also gives the Mustangs victories in seven of their last eight games, and nine of their last 11.
Junior guard Brittany Gilliam scored a team-high 15 points for the Ponies, while junior forward Delisha Wills added 14.
But the game was decided by the SMU defense, which limited the Green Wave to just 29.2 percent shooting from the floor, including just 23.1 percent in the first half.
The Mustangs now head west to El Paso to face the UTEP Miners in a clash of the top two teams in Conference USA. The Miners, who won both regular-season meetings a year ago with the Mustangs, won the regular-season title last season, while SMU beat UTEP in the final of the C-USA Tournament to earn a guaranteed berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The SMU-UTEP game will tip off at 3 p.m. Saturday, and can be heard on a tape-delay basis on KAAM (770 AM). The broadcast will begin shortly after the conclusion of the SMU men's basketball team's broadcast on KAAM. The broadcast of the women's game in El Paso expected to begin between 6:15 and 6:30 (central time).
