EL PASO, Texas (SMU) - Junior forward Delisha Wills tied her season high with 20 points, and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, to lead the SMU women's basketball team to a 70-64 victory over Conference USA rival UTEP at the Don Haskins Center Saturday afternoon in El Paso.
The victory was SMU's 18th in 25 meetings with the Miners, who won the Conference USA regular-season title last year before falling to SMU in the Conference USA Championship in Orlando. With the win, SMU improved to 12-7 on the season and 5-1 against C-USA opponents. UTEP lost its share of the conference lead, slipping to 11-8 and 4-2.
Wills came out hot for the Ponies, hitting six of her first seven shots for 13 first-half points. She continued her hot shooting inside, finishing the game with a season-high nine field goals (tying her career high that she set Feb. 14, 2008 in SMU's win over Memphis).
Wills was one of three Mustangs who scored in double figures. Junior guard Brittany Gilliam scored 11 points (and had eight rebounds to just miss her sixth double-double of the season), and freshman Christine Elliott had 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting.
As a team, the Mustangs dominated inside, outscoring the Miners, 32-18 in the paint and 15-4 on second-chance points. The SMU bench also outscored UTEP's reserves, 20-14.
The victory was SMU's fourth in a row and fourth consecutive win on the road.
After playing three straight road games, the Mustangs now return home to host Houston at 7 p.m. Thursday night and Rice at 2 p.m. Saturday in a pair of games that can be heard live on KAAM (770 AM).
