DALLAS (SMU) - Four players scored 10 or more points and the Mustangs went on a 23-6 to start the second half as the SMU women's basketball team pulled away from Rice, 68-52, Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
The victory improves the Mustangs' record to 14-7 overall and 7-1 in Conference USA games, while Rice slips to 5-16, 0-8.
The win also was the sixth in a row for the Mustangs. It is the eighth time in the history of the program the Ponies have reeled off a streak of at least six victories - all eight streaks have come during Rhonda Rompola's tenure as the team's head coach.
Junior Brittany Gilliam led the Mustangs with 14 points. Freshman center Christine Elliott scored 11 points - and came one rebound short of her third double-double (points-rebounds) - while junior Delisha Wills and sophomore LaShandra Hill scored 10 points apiece.
Freshman forward Alicia Mitcham had the best game of her young career, coming off the bench to set new career highs in field goals (3), rebounds (7) and points (9) in just 12 minutes of playing time.
The victory ensured that the Mustangs will head out on the road with at least a share of the Conference USA lead. The Mustangs began Saturday tied with Southern Miss atop the conference standings, and after winning against the Owls, await the outcome of Southern Miss's game with East Carolina Saturday evening.
SMU and Southern Miss will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in a game that can be heard live on KAAM (770 AM) and can be seen nationally on CBS College Sports.
