DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs swept Houston Saturday night (25-20, 25-19, 25-19), stretching their home winning streak to 11 games, tying the school record for wins in Moody Coliseum set in 2003. With the win, SMU improved to 17-7, 7-3 in Conference USA, while the Cougars fell to 7-19, 4-7 in C-USA.
The win was the 210th in program history for the Mustangs. Lisa Seifert moved into fifth all-time in wins at SMU, passing Dennis Ralston who recorded 209 as men's tennis coach.
With the Mustangs leading 18-17 in the first set, SMU out-scored Houston 7-3 to take the first set 25-20. The Mustangs hit .351 in the set, and never let up. SMU went on an 11-6 run to start the second set, stretching the lead to 19-10 before closing the set 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Mustangs led 10-8 before opening the lead to 18-10. SMU never let the Cougars get close, ending the match with a 25-19 victory in the third set. The Mustangs out-hit Houston .311 to .110 over the course of the match to take the win.
Dana Powell and Kendra Kahanek led the Mustangs with 10 kills each. Powell added nine digs and a block assist, while Kahanek recorded four blocks. Kelli Becerra recorded 35 assists in the match.
The match was also Dig Pink for the Mustangs, an event sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. SMU raised $1,245 during the event.
SMU will be back in action Friday when they host Tulane at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
