DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team carded rounds of 276 and 275 on Tuesday at the Baylor Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club and surged to a second-place finish in the tournament, which featured seven top-50 teams. Individually, SMU's James Kwon defended his 2008 Baylor Intercollegiate title. Kwon, who shot a first-round 76 Monday, bounced back to shoot 11-under over the final 36 holes to finish at 6-under 207.
As a team, SMU finished at 1-under 851 and finished just three strokes behind defending NCAA and BU Intercollegiate champion Texas A&M (-4). The third-place team, 39th-ranked Iowa, finished at 13-over, 14 strokes behind the Mustangs. Fourth-ranked Texas finished eighth at 23-over, 24 shots off the Mustangs' pace.
In addition to Kwon, SMU had two other Mustangs finish in the top 10 - Kelly Kraft and Ben Tewes. Kraft tied for fifth at 2-under 211, while Tewes tied for 10th at 1-over 214. Matt Schovee rounded out the scoring `Stangs, tying for 23rd at 6-over 219.
The final day was stretched to 30 holes after play was suspended Monday evening due to rain. A full final leaderboard is available here.
The tournament was the last of the fall for SMU, which will return to the links in February.
