DALLAS (SMU) - Brittany Gilliam hit a jumper off the backboard with 2.4 seconds left to give SMU a 66-65 lead. The senior then blocked what would've been a game-winning layup by Nicole Capurso with less than a second left to give SMU a come-from-behind win over Hofstra.
Hofstra (7-4) led 51-43 with 8:52 left in the game before the Mustangs (9-2) started chipping away. SMU took the lead 54-53 with 6:48 left on a bucket by Samantha Mahnesmith, but the Pride took the lead back and stretched it to five, 62-57, with 3:37 left to play.
Haley Day knocked down a pair of clutch free throws with 39 seconds left to tie the game 64-64. Shante Evans went to the line for Hofstra with 12 seconds left, but was only able to make the second shot, giving the Mustangs a chance to win with a last second shot.
Gilliam saved a tipped passed headed out of bounds on the far side of the court before knocking down what proved to be the game-winner from just outside the lane. Capurso got free behind the Mustangs and was breaking toward the basket after catching the full-court pass. With three-tenths of a second on the clock, Gilliam knocked the shot out of bounds, and Hofstra never got another shot off.
Gilliam led the Mustangs with 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out seven assists. Mahnesmith scored a career-high 16 points, and Haley Day added 13 for SMU.
The Mustangs were just 26-of-71 , 36.6-percent, from the field, with 14 shots getting blocked, six by Hofstra's Jess Fuller, a 6-4 senior.
SMU will host Texas Southern Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to Utah to take on the Utes on January 2 at 2 p.m.
