MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) - SMU junior forward Delisha Wills scored a season-high 22 points and junior guard Brittany Gilliam added 19 to lead the SMU women's basketball team to 71-57 win over Conference USA rival Memphis Thursday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, Tenn. The Mustangs improved to 15-9 overall and 8-4 in Conference USA games, while Memphis slipped to 9-15, 2-9.
For Wills, it was her third game this season in which she had 20 or more points, and the fifth of her career. Now just 40 points shy of scoring 1,000 points in her career, Wills had her best shooting game of the season, hitting 8-of-11 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
The game also marked a milestone for SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola. Her 327th career victory also gave the Mustangs at least 15 wins in 16 of the 18 seasons for which Rompola has been the Mustangs' head coach.
Sophomore guard LaShandra Hill led the Mustangs with six assists, tying her career high that she set last year in the Mustangs' victory over UCF. Gilliam led the Mustangs in steals, with five, while redshirt freshman post Heidi Brandenburg had a pair of blocked shots off the bench.
The Mustangs now return home to face UAB at 2 p.m. Sunday in a game that marks SMU's entry in the nationwide "Pink Zone" initiative, created two years ago by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to help raise awareness and show support as a community against breast cancer, the second-leading cause of death for all women and the leading overall cause of death in women between the ages of 20-59.
A portion of the proceeds from an on-line auction and the sale of "Pony Up! for the Cure" T-shirts - which are available on game day - will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Dallas County.
